Jersey City 10.01.2011

Here I leave behind – a little piece of myself – to share with people…

As part of the remarkable 4th Street Arts Festival (now in its 8th fabulous year), Guerilla Haiku returned to the East Coast and our chosen hometown of Jersey City, NJ.

It was a rainy day, but similar to postmen and women- the Art Fest go-ers and Haiku Artists did not let weather stop our purpose! Every spare bit of street was covered with our haiku thoughts, and by the time our 4 crews branched out to neighborhoods all over JC, most of the Festival attendees had chalky hands, and had left a little of their own creative words to grace the space that was made to celebrate creation. Fitting.

Thanks to Mac, and the rest of the 4th Street Crew for your Herculean Efforts to bring our fair city lots of joy. Happy viewing!

Samuel Gompers HS Garden Launch, May 31st, 2013

Hot day. 90 degrees in the shade. And there was very little shade to be found in this relentless school parking lot in Mott Haven, BX. But there we all were, a group of tenacious teenagers from Gompers HS known as the Green Team under the advisement of their teacher, Angela Mazza, me, and a host of other students, teachers and community members to bear witness to the opening of an entirely vertical garden in the school parking lot. The young men and women hoisted felt planters to different levels on the chain link fence, adding color and green...

Sustainable Cherry Hill Earth Day Festival goes Guerilla!

Sustainable Cherry Hill organizes a yearly Earth Day Festival gathering community organizations, schools and residents together to celebrate their community and talk about issues of sustainability.  Guerilla Haiku was invited by organizers this Saturday  to train a group of high school volunteers to get fest-goers writing haiku about Earth Day.  Many exciting things happened; A) The high school Agents of Haiku fully embraced their mission (to get EVERYONE to write at least one haiku) and approached as many people as they could find thereby...

Green Schools Alliance NYC 2013

In 2007 a consortium of schools on the Upper East Side got together to DO SOMETHING as school communities to protect the environment. 6 years later over 2500 schools are members of the Green Schools Alliance, making an international impact spearheaded by students, teachers and parents across the globe. Inspiring, no? The Lycee Francais de NY hosted this year’s Green Schools Alliance Earth Day Conference with sponsor, Veggiecation, an amazing organization dedicated to nutrition education for youth. Guerilla Haiku made an appearance to get...

GHM: BeHive After School in Austin

Thanks to the efforts of Alan De Anda, Guerilla Haiku made its way on December 5th, 2012 to Salinas Ave to haiku with a group of 2nd-4th graders at the BeHive Afterschool Program in the Marshall Apartments. We used paper instead of chalk (out of respect for the church property) and left a wake of brightly colored haiku all over the grounds. One young man, Miguel, destined for greatness, was relentless in getting EVERYONE he saw to write haiku with him. His powers of persuasion were impressive indeed. As are the photos of this band of...

GHM: Arlington Public Library Teen Zone

Arlington Library is doing great things with teen programming across the city, and the Teen Zone in Northeast Arlington has created a safe, and supportive environment for their after school youth mainly due to their incredible leader, Veronica, and the dedicated presence of local mom, Maria. When Veronica invited Guerilla Haiku in to do some Haikuing around the library after school, I could not say no, despite the darkening skies. (Even in Texas the night descends sooner in Winter). The result of our 2 hours at the Library was an initially...

GHM: CityLife Youth Group, December 2nd, 2012

TeamBuilding USA, the sponsor for Guerilla Haiku’s Texas Tour is affiliated with the CityLife Youth Group and partnered me with them to facilitate an event in and around the Bedford, TX area. This dynamic and creative group of teens, teen leaders, and supportive adults wreaked haiku havoc in the malls, parks and sidewalks of Bedford and its environs. Our Closing Ceremony at the CityLife offices in Euless ended appropriately, with pizza (and a delivery-boy-written haiku) and the most amazing haiku cheer I have yet to experience. Enjoy the...

GHM Dallas: December 1st, 2012

Thanks to the Dallas Flea, I had a place to start my Dallas adventures with ample inspiration! Jesse (aka the MOST amazing security guard in the universe) guarded my table against the hot Dallas wind that ripped through the South Side of Dallas at breakneck speeds. We wrote haiku about vendors, and small businesses over on Lamar- and tried to get them to play as well, but our most exciting moment happened between two sisters who initially needed parking, but returned to write haiku. The elder sister approached me and asked if she could write a...

TeamBuilding USA as Texas Tour Sponsor

JT called me bright and early the morning of our big event in NYC last May. “Liz and I are in town, what are you up to?” he boomed in his jolly voice.  Did I have an option for him!   Two hours later  he and Liz became members of Team West Village in the most ambitious Guerilla Haiku Event yet organized.  They covered their neighborhood, involving a ton of random New Yorkers in Haikuing (including the two Argentinian basketball players featured here), and by closing ceremony, they were hooked: “You are coming to...

Hosted by Out of Hand Theater for the second year in Atlanta, Guerilla Haiku inspired 5 groups of Agents in covering Atlanta with their words.  Segways were involved.  And dragons.  And maybe even pirates.  But don’t take my word for it.  Check out these photos! GHM wins Jersey City Art Eat Up!!

ProArts in Jersey City is an organization that cares about the intersection of Art and Community.  Clearly they are kindred spirits!   They host Quarterly Art Eat Up events where a number of artists present their projects to a host of assembled community members at a communal dinner.  At the end of the evening everyone votes on one project that they want to support.  And the profits from the evening go to fund the project with the most votes. There was a small but attentive and energized crowd in attendance.  5 wonderful projects;...
